Tasting Notes
The 2017 Cavern Select Dusi Zinfandel is a medium to full bodied wine with aromas and flavors of white pepper, blackberries, pine forest, and dried herbs. The wines’ rich mouthfeel and balanced acidity followed by dusty tannins on the finish.
Vineyard Notes
Dusi’s Dante vineyard- a famed dry-farmed, head-trained vineyard on the west side of the 101 in the Templeton Gap district.
Production Notes
The grapes were harvested early in the morning by hand and delivered to the winery in bins. Fermented in one of our small tanks and completed malolactic fermentation in barrel. The wine was aged for 14 months in 100% new oak (75% European, 20% American, and 5% French).
Winemaker Notes
Zinfandel is one of the few varieties we like to pair with American oak. We feel the high vanilla qualities of American oak pairs well with Zinfandel.

Serve with cheese & charcuterie, fresh pastas with mushrooms and herbs, and roasted lamb.

The 2017 vintage began with above average rainfall as the Paso Robles area began to rebound from drought. The wet start was followed by average temperatures that lasted through June. Higher than average winds during bloom affected fruit set in some areas of Paso Robles. Harvest was a few days later than average this year, compressing our growing season. A severe heat spike in September with highs of 115 degrees halted maturation, delaying harvest for about two weeks. Temperatures became more seasonal throughout October until a frost in some areas of Paso Robles in late October created more challenges for our harvest. Overall, the 2017 harvest was an oddly paced, challenging harvest in Paso Robles. In spite of difficult conditions, the vintage shows excellent maturity and depth of flavor.
