2018 Cavern Select Roussanne
The 2018 Cavern Select Roussanne has notes of brioche, wet stone, and candied lemon on the nose. A round mouthfeel on the mid-palate pairs with flavors of apricot and chamomile. The wine has a long, refreshing finish.

100% from the Adelaida district. This is a very small lot production. We received 2 tons in mid-September from the far western part of the Adelaida district. Beautiful small clusters with the characteristic russet color Roussanne is known for.
Grapes were picked in the cool early morning to preserve freshness, brought in, destemmed, and pressed. The grapes were gently pressed to extract aromatics from the skins and placed in two neutral French oak puncheons and a new acacia barrel. The wine fermented cool. The wine aged on its lees for 6 months.

Vintage Notes: The 2018 vintage began with a wet cool, wet spring. The cool weather delayed bud break and extended flowering leading to shatter in some exposed areas. In Mid-April some areas frosted, further delaying set and the 2018 season. A 40-day heat wave in July and August created challenges in most areas. By late August, the weather became more seasonal with temperatures remaining mild throughout harvest. On average, harvest was 2 weeks later than recent vintages at Robert Hall. The initial cool temperatures and heat wave lead vines to produce smaller clusters and berries, creating dark, phenolically dense wines. The 2018 vintage is shaping up to be a great vintage in Paso Robles with excellent maturity and aging potential.
