2017 Cavern Select Syrah
Our 2017 Cavern Select Syrah has notes of brandied cherries, brown sugar, and chocolate on the nose. Flavors of blackberry cobbler and coffee fill out this round, full bodied wine. The wine has beautiful dusty tannins and a soft lingering finish.
100% from a single vineyard in the Willow Creek district. Located on a beautiful sloped hilltop, this vineyard makes truly special wines. The vineyard’s calcareous soils and good exposure create optimal growing parameters, which is expressed of the wine’s structure and character.
This Willow Creek vineyard is new to us this year. Harvested in early September, this was the first Syrah in the winery this vintage. The small dark berries and the small clusters created a phenolicly dense, inky wine. The wine aged in 60% new French oak for 20 months. We love to enjoy this wine slightly chilled at about 68°F/20°C.
Vintage Notes: The 2017 vintage began with above average rainfall as the Paso Robles area began to rebound from drought. The wet start was followed by average temperatures that lasted through June. Higher than average winds during bloom affected fruit set in some areas of Paso Robles. Harvest was a few days later than average this year, compressing our growing season. A severe heat spike in September with highs of 115 degrees halted maturation, delaying harvest for about two weeks. Temperatures became more seasonal throughout October until a frost in some areas of Paso Robles in late October created more challenges for our harvest. Overall, the 2017 harvest was an oddly paced, challenging harvest in Paso Robles. In spite of difficult conditions, the vintage shows excellent maturity and depth of flavor.
