2018 Cavern Select Vermentino
The 2018 Cavern Select Vermentino has notes of citrus and peach blossom on the nose. White peach, vanilla bean, and flint flavors on the mid-palate with a crisp, racy finish.
100% from the El Pomar appellation of the Paso Robles AVA. Tucked back in the hills behind the winery.
Grapes were picked in the cool early morning to preserve freshness, brought in, destemmed, and pressed. The free run was kept separate and placed in a small stainless steel tank and one neutral puncheon. The wine fermented cool. After clean up and stabilization the wines were blended to make our 2017 Cavern Select Vermentino.
Vermentino is a new grape varietal for Robert Hall. Very little is planted in the US, so working with the varietal is an exciting opportunity. Vermentino is largely planted in Italy (Sardinia, Toscana, Liguria, Umbria) and France (Provence, Corsica, Languedoc-Roussillon). Thought to be the same as the varietal Rolle in Provence and is believed to have come from the Malvasia genetic line.
Food Pairing Notes

The 2018 vintage began with a wet cool, wet spring. The cool weather delayed bud break and extended flowering leading to shatter in some exposed areas. In Mid-April some areas frosted, further delaying set and the 2018 season. A 40-day heat wave in July and August created challenges in most areas. By late August, the weather became more seasonal with temperatures remaining mild throughout harvest. On average, harvest was 2 weeks later than recent vintages at Robert Hall. The initial cool temperatures and heat wave lead vines to produce smaller clusters and berries, creating dark, phenolically dense wines. The 2018 vintage is shaping up to be a great vintage in Paso Robles with excellent maturity and aging potential.
